The multi-state trail was first proposed in 1979 as a group effort between multiple regional hiking groups. It was originally named the Brandywine-Susquehanna Trail but was soon changed to the name we know today – the Mason-Dixon Trail System.
Today, the trail’s care and legacy is lead by our raggedy band of volunteers across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. Quarterly meetings are held in-person or virtually depending on availability of the board members. They are open to the public and the in-person meetings are accompanied by a group hike on a section of the M-DT.
